Sawyer's Turn for A Fever

Yesterday Sawyer caught the fever that Dempsey had been fighting for the passed few days.  He immediately gets worried.  He is terrified of throwing up and a fever equals sickness which equals vomit.  That is his logic.  I have to work very hard to help him calm down and not worry because he is precisely the kind of person that will worry themselves to actual sickness when sickness would not have shown up if they hadn't worried so much.

Fortunately I had picked up some peppermint essential oil from Julianne on Thursday for Dempsey.  Sawyer is a fan of holistic and homeopathic approaches because he knows that processed sugar isn't good for you.  He also knows that children's medicines have processed sugar in them to make them appealing to kids.  In an effort to give his body something to work on besides water I suggested chocolate milk.  He kinda freaked for a moment because he knows that has processed sugar in it.  I had to assure and reassure him that the sugar in there wouldn't worsen his fever/ sickness.  It's exhausting trying to keep him calm.

Whenever he gets sick and begins to worry his go-to phrase is "I need to go to Heaven."  He says that because he knows there will be NO FEVERS or sickness in Heaven.  The opposite is also true for him when he's feeling better after being sick, "I don't need to go to Heaven any more."  It makes me smile that when he's sick he thinks about Heaven and God instead of doctors and man.  We pray over him and with him a lot in general but even more so when he's sick.

Yesterday I had him take a lot of our Vita-Gard and chewable Vitamin C.  In addition to that I used the peppermint oil I used for Dempsey.  I would have used some OTC meds too but he refuses to take the grape flavored stuff and we didn't have any cherry.  He took the vitamins and adorned the oil prior to going to Eastside CC with Granny and Granddad.  He was really excited to go to church because he was taking a Bible and going to put a ball in some container to help fill it up so one day, when it's full, they can shoot the balls out of it and have a pizza party.  Far be it from me to hinder the potential for a pizza party at church.

He didn't want to take the vitamins AT church so I had him take some more before he went inside and after he got out.  After church we went to dinner with the group.  His fever had risen, his body was achy, and he was tired.  Really tired.  Jake met us for dinner and ended up taking Sawyer home while I took Dempsey with me to drop Granny and Granddad off at home.  Ironically Dempsey and I beat Jake and Sawyer home.  Strange.

I ended up driving to the store to get some OTC cherry flavored fever-reducing meds for Sawyer.  At this point his fever was at 103.3.  When I got home we gave him the medicine and had him take a cool-cooler-cold shower to help his body break the fever.  It worked.  By the time he was dried off his fever was down to 101.7.  A significant improvement.  More vitamins.  Bag of ice resting on his head as he laid on the couch.  He was wiped out and worried.  We had to keep telling him he was doing better because the numbers were lower and that is what he wanted.  He fell asleep quickly.

He rose pretty early this morning and Jake gave him some more medicine.  His fever had climbed slightly but his spirits were much higher.  I gave him several options for breakfast and he asked "which one has more protein?".  The answer was eggs.  So, he had scrambled eggs and took a bite of toast and jam.  He still doesn't have much of an appetite and I don't place all the blame on the fever... it's HOT weather wise right now.  When it's hot, weather wise, none of eat all the much.  So, we're heavy on the water right now.

I am pleased to say that Sawyer is feeling much better.  His fever is hovering at 100 but his body isn't aching, he isn't worrying, and he is able to play more like normal.  Praise God for healing my boy and creating bodies that can fight all sorts of bugs that didn't exist when He created us.
