Sawyer showed me where his rug burn was on his back. I said "But it
doesn't hurt anymore right?" He said, "Right, thanks to my friend
God."
I love how he gets it. So simple. No pretense. Pure faith. He knows
God created the human body and that it can repair most of the hurts it
encounters. Love this boy!
Sawyer is brilliant. I am not ashamed to point that out because anyone who talks with him for five seconds will know this. So, I thought I would log some of his sayings... hence "Sawyerisms".

Pasta
Upon telling sawyer it was "angel hair" pasta in the spaghetti he
snickered and said "did you steal some angel's hair and boil it up?"

The Star
Sawyer asked me what I love about the universe. He asked "which star is your favorite?" I said I didn't know. He offered this- "How about this one? I'll give you a hint. The wise men followed it."

High Five
I'm wondering how long it will take Dempsey to catch on to Sawyer's brilliant idea of the "High Five". The high five is not a new invention. On the contrary, it has been around for decades- long before Sawyer ever was.
The significance of the Sawyer High Five is that it is the method by which Sawyer gets Dempsey to move toward or away from things. Here are a few examples:
1. Granny, Sawyer, and Dempsey went for a walk around the block. Dempsey started becoming a tad defiant and not progressing towards the house. So, Sawyer ingeniously started telling him "Dempsey, high five... high five." Well, Dempsey being so proud of his ability to fulfill brother's request would move toward Sawyer which was also in the direction of the house.
2. Just now, from my bedroom where Sawyer was having a "movie night", I heard Sawyer say "High five, Dempsey. High five!" I could tell from the sounds and the tone of Sawyer's voice that Dempsey was messing with something he shouldn't be and it was bothering Sawyer. Sawyer kept speaking that phrase and Dempsey kept obliging which led to the stopping of current problem and peace and harmony existing again.
Sawyer came out just now and I asked him "What was Dempsey doing to make you say "high five"? He told me Dempsey was messing with a cord that hangs under our mounted television (speaker wires).
This is just another example of Sawyer's brilliance! I am certain that elder siblings have created some geniusesque methods for getting junior siblings to obey/ behave. In some instances this could be considered manipulation but since I know Sawyer's heart I know it's not that in the negative sense. I'll give him a few years before I change my stance on this. :-)

Between Heaven and Birth
During Sawyer's night time routine he dropped or misplaced his favorite blue blanket. It's one that has colorful polka dots on it. He has had this blanket since he was in-utero. I don't recall who gave this particular blanket to him but he made quite the tender-hearted fuss about it tonight. He said, "Someone must have really loved me." I told him they sure did and that they gave it to him while he was still in my tummy. I told him it was from my baby shower for him. Puzzled, he asked me what a baby shower was. I explained that it was a sort of party in his honor where people gave us gifts for him... things that we would need for a baby. Still perplexed he asked, "How could you have a party without me there?" I smiled. We talked about it a little more.
Then, as I was saying buenos noches, I called him "Angel".
He asked, "Why do you call me 'Angel'?"
I said, "Because you're my angel. I believe you were in Heaven before you were given to me."
Slightly worried, he asked, "When I was dead?"
"No, Honey. I believe your spirit was with God before your body was created."
"Oh.... I was thinking that God would throw me up in the air in heaven. Then I would bump, hit a door. It would close and be dark and I would wait."
"Until you were born?"
"Yes."
I love how his precious mind works. God is beyond-words amazing. I still can't believe that I get to be this kids mom. He makes me so proud!

Cell Phone Chit Chat
Talking about cell phones, I asked Jake "Who makes the Galaxy S III?"
Sawyer interjects, "God does."
Sawyer interjects, "God does."
A What?!?!....... NO WAY!
While taking a bath with Dempsey, Sawyer informed me he wants another
brother. I asked why and he said "because I love Dempsey so much... I
think boys are nice."
I inquired if he'd like a sister and he said "no, I prefer brothers".
Thankfully he answered that question right.
Jake asked what made him think of wanting another brother and Sawyer
said "My brain told me."
He is TOO much!
I started to talk to him about adoption but we didn't make any
headway. Another day, perhaps.

Fwd: Sawyerism
My mom sent this to me today:
I was playing Sudoku while he was playing Wii. He asked me what I was doing. I had him come over so I could show him what Sudoku was. After a brief explanation, he said that was enough..." cause he sometimes has short term memory loss".
what a kid....

Time is Confusing
"A little of a lot... that's what doesn't make any sense..."
Sawyer was asking when Daddy would be home. I said "two hours". He told me "that's not a very long time." I replied with "well, it's about 120 minutes." "120 minutes?!" he exclaimed. "Yep." "That doesn't make any sense. That's a little of a lot of numbers."
He explained further, later, that what was really confusing to him (confused eyebrows and all) was that it was a little number (only TWO hours) but it meant a bigger number (ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY minutes).
We are constantly working on the concept of time. I understand this will take many more years.

Is God in Hell
Somehow we got on the topic of hell and what it is. I can't remember all the parts of the conversation but here are the juicy bits...
Me: I love you Monster. You're my favorite Sawyer.
Sawyer: I love you too.
Me: Hey, do you know who is the only person who loves you more than I love you?
Sawyer: [Knowingly] God.
Me: That's right.
...
...
Sawyer: Is God in hell?
Me: No.
Sawyer: No?! But why not?
Me: Because hell is the opposite of God. Hell must be an awful place... to be without God for eternity...!
Sawyer: What's eternity?
Me: Forever. And ever. And ever.
Sawyer: But how can I stay alive?
Me: On earth?
Sawyer: No, how can I stay alive with God?
Me: Well, you have to accept his son, Jesus Christ, into your heart. You have to believe that he died on a cross for all the wrong things you've done and will do... sin. Once you've accepted Jesus God sends the Holy Spirit to live in your heart and fill you with the power to love those you wouldn't be able to otherwise. [he starts smirking] That's all you have to do.
Sawyer: I don't have to believe... I already believe. [and he happily walks away]
I simply love 5 year old theology. Why do us adults make things so complicated? Kids are vastly more in tune with the things and ways of God. I work to be like my Sawyer these days.
Thank you, God, for the opportunity to be Sawyer's Mommy. No greater joy has there been in my life. You speak to me through him daily and I am working to listen harder and pay closer attention. He makes me laugh and brings tears of joy to my eyes. He makes me so proud and I truly feel that you broke the mold with my first born. I cannot wait to see what You do with my second. Lord help us to guide him in the way he should go and let us not ever minimize the impact you have already had on this world because of him. I love him so much and I know that you love him infinitely more. Thank you for Sawyer. Amen.
Sawyer, Mommy loves you heart! I love the person you are and the joy that you've been to me these 5 1/2 years. You make Mommy's heart smile and I am so proud to have you as my son!

A Mommy's Editorial
For the past few days Sawyer has been off and on with asking me about pregnancy. "How do babies come out of their mommy's tummies?" "Does it hurt to get the babies out?" "Aren't you glad you're not pregnant any more?" I've answered honestly and am thankful that one of his questions wasn't "how are babies created?".
All of these questions and more are just precious to me as I step back and observe just how my Big Boy is growing up. I love his mind. I always have. I love how he thinks, what he thinks about, how he articulates his thoughts. It is so much fun to be Sawyer's mom!! Thank you Jesus for this precious gift. He makes my heart so happy and is the second thing to ever make me feel pure joy (his daddy being the first).
He has also taken to giving me massages. Love it! I wrote a post about this earlier you can scroll down to find the entry titled Future Physical Therapist...
Sawyer is growing in his role as big brother as Dempsey grows. We still have to remind Sawyer to be gentle and he struggles with remembering to put his things high enough where Dempsey can't reach them. I know that I'm a mom who LOVES natural consequences but there are just some things where a little reminder can go a long way in saving heartache.
My Monster is still the sweetest, most gentle kid I know. So tender-hearted. Yesterday he let his emotions get the better of him (like we all do from time to time) and he hit me out of anger. I didn't overreact, yell, or retaliate. I simply asked him "Why did you hit Mommy?" He said "Because I am angry." That led him to being put in time out and then sent out into the garden for some child labor time... a.k.a. you-really-need-to-think-about-how-you-treat-your-daddy's-wife time. As he was working in the "rock quarry" I watered the garden. We talked about the incident a little bit here and there. When Jake was done doing whatever he was working on at the time Sawyer and I walked over to him and I told Sawyer "You need to tell Daddy why you hit his wife." I don't know exactly why I chose to word it that way other than it sheds a new light on the way he looks at me... I'm not just his mom, I'm someone's wife... somebody else loves me and values me. I'm sure there's more in that somewhere but that's not the point of this post. Anyway, when Sawyer had to explain the incident the crocodile tears came. It hits him like a ton of bricks and it's all he can do to breathe in between asking for forgiveness and apologizing. It really is a sweet process to watch.
When he's done explaining himself I always offer to cuddle with him. This way we can reconnect and he can talk out his feelings and physically know that I love him no matter what he does. Such powerful moments we, as parents, have the opportunity to embrace. Lots of growing, on both sides, that is possible.
Sawyer is exceptional at being affirming. He is also good at trash talking (thanks to Granddad, my dad). I know it seems contradictory but once you've got a firm grasp of the first one the second one just becomes comical. We just have to shape his trash-talking lingo and make it family friendly in case he does this around people who aren't familiar with it.
He has always been and still is our boundary respecter, rule follower, appeaser. He loves to help, especially when it's his idea. I work hard to make sure that he is not a people pleaser or a yes man. This can be tricky. It's a fine line to walk when you tell a child "life isn't all about you" and then they tend to make it all about someone else. It's okay if that someone else is the Almighty but often times it's not. Jake and I work to talk these things through with Sawyer when they come up.
Speaking of God... Sawyer is still acutely in tune with Him and it makes me so proud. I love his genuine prayers that include things like "Thank you for making us... thank you for our Wii... thank you for everything... thank you for our planet... thank you for our house... in your Son's most precious name, amen." Oh, brings grown men to tears so you know it's good stuff! He feels deeply the angst of the human condition... I'm just not sure how to guide this gift. So much I want him to do but I'm conflicted because I feel he is too young (certain arenas are just not safe for kiddos). I really should just trust the Lord. I know I won't put Sawyer in harms way and I know he brings great joy to all who encounter him. Therefore, I want more people to encounter him. :-)
Clearly I could go on and on about my Monster. However, I will stop here and save the rest for another Mommy's Editorial. This was fun and I hope it doesn't detract from the Sawyer-ness this blog is intended for... I just wanted to share the Mommy's perspective.

Future Physical Therapist of Some Sort
While Daddy (Jake) was giving brother Dempsey his bath Sawyer offered to give me a massage. I guess this came so quickly to his mind because he knew Granny and Mommy had seen Laura just a few days ago for just that reason. Or he is just that in tune with the needs of women (at such an early age? yikes!). Either way he offered and I accepted.
He told me I could lay on the floor and use a towel as a pillow so I could still see. I got situated and the therapy began.
He ran his hands over my back with such gentle pressure and he kept asking "does this feel good?" I always replied yes because it did... even if it wasn't really doing anything for my muscles it was making my nerve endings happy and it was bonding time with my Monster.
All the sudden there were these thumps up and down my back. Not hard or anything just different than his massage. He asked if that felt good too. It was fine. Then he spent some time scratching my back with his newly trimmed finger nails. Boo for me. Still, sweet moments with my Big Boy.
When we counted down from 13 (arbitrary, I know) he was done. We discussed the session. He showed me how he did those "thumps". He showed me two fists, one stationary and the other gently hitting it. He said, "I did it just like your doctor does" with such a prideful smile on his face. I knew instantly I was going to have to record this and pass it on to Nathan Cowell, D.C..
I don't know if this simply means Sawyer pays attention (to EVERYTHING) or if we have a future physical therapist of some sort on our hands... time will tell.
For now, I will enjoy these moments and work some lessons in a long the way. Oh, and hopefully make a few professionals happy too. :-)
**Note: I LOVE both my massage therapist and my chiropractor so much!!!!!

A God Reminder
Sawyer came into the kitchen and told me:
You know what's better than saving water?

What made you made you think of that.

Divine Connection
Granny told me about something Sawyer said this morning.
Sawyer was sitting in the chair playing a Wii game. Then he said
Oh, I forgot that word but God reminded me. "Random". Wasn't that nice
of God to remind me?
I love how he gives God the credit! And so freely!!
Thank you Lord for my sweet Sawyer and the lessons you teach us
through him. Amen.

Last Thoughts At Bedtime
When I tucked Sawyer in he told me "If you need me come get me. If it's hard figure it out yourself... but if you need help get me because I'm good at helping." Love him!!

I Wish
I just asked Sawyer if he wanted to go to Petsmart. He said sure "if
we have enough money to buy a pet". I said we need to get kitty food
and he says "or dog food for a dog". Lol!

Resume? Uh... ok.
While practicing math addition Sawyer says
My arms are losing strength can we should resume later? Are you
picking me up tonight?
Yes.
We can resume then.
Resume? Goodness! That's the neat thing about the menus of games using
better words than "stop" and "start".

Space
Sawyer told me yesterday
I wish we had enough money to go to space.

Gum Scents
That gum grabbed my nose again.
That's called Sawyer nose heaven.
That is what Sawyer says about the "blue gum" (Trident original) we
bought at Costco yesterday as he smells it from its storage place. :-)

The Logic of Reverse
Our flat screen TV has recently started turning off by itself. We don't know why it does this but we think it has to do with over heating or a faulty power supply.
I asked Sawyer to turn on the TV and put on a Baby Einstein for Dempsey. As he was doing this for me he asked...
"Do you think it we left the TV off for the whole time it would turn on by itself? Because if we leave it on too long it turns off by itself so if we left it off would it turn on?"
I love the way he thinks!!!

Frasier
We watch an episode of Frasier at either lunch or dinner. Sawyer has
grown accustomed to this. So much so that he just went to the bathroom
and yelled "Don't start the next one without me!" We said "ok" and he
said "You promise?" "Yes!"

His Teacher's Reaction
Below is the body of an email I sent to Sawyer's teacher. Below the line is her response to me. Love this!
Laura (Mrs. Meno),_________________________________________________________
I had it told to me twice yesterday that our Sawyer touched you w/ some things he said. I would love to bear about them, if you can recall, so I can add them to his blog.
He had a good first Friday School and I'm certain they will only get better and better. We look forward to getting to know you and we are enjoying this home schooling journey so far.
Sawyer is the sweetest kid I've ever known and I'm not just saying that because I'm his mom. There is something super unique and splendidly special about our Sawyer. God really outdid himself. Should you ever need a laugh or a reason to believe in humanity again Sawyer's blog is http://sawyerupdates.blogspot.com. We had to start a log of his sayings and thoughts because they are priceless. Hopefully Dempsey will have a similar blog one day.
Cheers and blessings upon you as you give of yourself and your time to pour into these wonderful children.
In the future I will be writing some of the things he says down. I wasn't ready for him on Friday. I can't even remember what he shared because the things he said were so.........different. I do remember him telling me I was brilliant, and he said something about teaching me some things. I can't wait for next week! He is a treasure!
Oh, and he looked concerned because all the kids wanted all of his skittles he won in the assembly. I told him that if he like to share a few he could but he didn't have to share them all. He could just put them away and save them for later, and he said he liked that answer.

Sincerity
Last night was one of THEE roughest nights I (mommy) had w/ little
brother Dempsey. So, it was no surprise that I wanted and needed to
take a nap. After lunch I laid down on the couch as Sawyer was setting
up to play Indiana Jones Lego on the Wii.
I told him I was going to lay down because I was tired due to a bad
night w/ Dempsey. His first response was "I'm sorry to hear that." the
to e in his voice is what made it priceless and sweet.
He is so special.

Morning Chit Chat
S: I like having Dempsey around. ...he doesn't cause all the trouble.
S: I'm attracted to light. When I wake up in the morning I look for the light because then I know you're awake and I find you. There are some animals that are attracted to light too. Can I tell you what they are? Wasps... June bugs... what other animals are attracted to light? ... are moths a type of species? [oh the tangents!]
S: I'll let Dempsey do a lot more than what you let him do. I'm a good big brother and I love him.

Say What?
Sawyer and Jake were talking. Jake was explaining their exercise
challenges and Sawyer interrupted. Jake said "Let me finish my
sentence." Sawyer replied, "Oh, I'm sorry I interjected."

The Ceiling? Sure!
Mom can I tell you something cool God can do?
Sure.
He can walk on ceilings!
He sure can, Sawyer.
I love how when Sawyer think of something cool it involved walking on the ceiling.

Food
"Mom, when you're done can I have Cheez-its?"
Me: I recounted what he's eaten this morning- Cheerios w/ raspberries,
water, a sucker...
"I've had sugar, but Cheez-its aren't sugary... they're salty. I try
to eat all kinds of food."

Ah... the Internet
We're hearing a lot of this lately...
"Dad, can you check on the internet how to pass this level?"
Jake follows up with "No. I think you can pass this level all by yourself. I believe in you."
Sawyer's common retort is "Ugh!" Or sometimes a dramatic sigh.
Another life lesson to be applied here: taking the easy way 1. robs you of some fun (also some trial and error) and 2. is NOT the answer. We celebrate a little louder when he passes the level without the wisdom of the internet to hopefully show that making your way is ultimately better.

Sawyer On Sunflowers

view full image
"Sawyer's entry about our sunflowers: I like the ones that are bigger than ever. They're growing well, and I hope they grow better. They are green right. They will be yellow. They are growing outside, in the back, and the roots are making them grow. We water them two times a day. Once in the day and once dark. Do they make any food? I thank you God for helping it grow. (This post was worded by Sawyer and typed verbatim by Mommy.)"

Oh My...
After a wonderful dinner and swim at the Vincent's we were driving
home. We were discussing the delicious food and I said it would have
been better if my mouth wasn't hurting.
We were explaining canquor (sp?) sores and Sawyer continued to worry.
Gasping he said, "Oh no. Oh... my heck!"
Jake and I busted up laughing. We couldn't help it. He is so wonderful.

An Idea
Conversation between Sawyer and Granddad:
S: I have an idea.
Gdad: What's that?
S: We can share a donut.
Gdad: Really? Do you have one?
S: See, that's my idea...
Sawyer has been wanting to get a donut for a few days now but it
hasn't worked out. So, I told him to ask Granddad and this is what
happened. :-)

Survival...
We forgot snacks for Splash and Sawyer just asked Jake "Did you not bring snacks because you don't want me to survive?"
Ouch!
"Survive"... this kid cracks me up.

So Thoughtful
I picked the boys up from my parents house this morning with the intention of going to church- the 11 service. After observing Dempsey for a while I remarked that he was going to call me out of service because he was getting tired and would therefore be fussy in his class.
We didn't make it to church because Dempsey fell asleep in the van half way there.
Sawyer asked why I was sad about not going to church. I told him that Mommy really likes sitting with Daddy in church and we only get to do that at this particular service. I told him that I wanted him to go to Sunday School because learning about our Creator, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and how to be salt and light to His world is IMPORTANT.
When we pulled into our driveway Sawyer said this:
"When daddy gets home I will let you have some good time with him since you didn't get to see him at church. So I won't have to show him any Star Wars or anything..."
Sweetest kid ever!

Tangerines
The boys and I did some shopping at Fresh & Easy today. Sawyer wanted
some tangerines. Not having them more than once before I was surprised
at his choice. Never the less I bought them because I want to
encourage healthy food choices.
At home I peeled one. He ate a segment. Proclaimed it was delicious
and proceeded to ask me for two whole tangerines.
Later, from the living room, I bear him exclaim "These oranges are
delicious!" When I reminded him they were not oranges but tangerines
he retorted "Well, they're like oranges inly smaller. That's why I
call them oranges."
Ok Sawyer. Ok.

A Snoodle's Tale | Veggie Tales
As we were watching this particular episode Sawyer realized one of the
characters. He tells me "It's God." He was right. I love how he gets
that from a story that never mentioned the word God.
If you haven't seen this Veggie Tales I highly recommend you go check it out!

Good Morning
Jake took a freshly awake Dempsey into Sawyer's room this morning. The
first things I hear are "Good morning Dempsey" and "I love you
Dempsey, so much" from a sleepy sounding Sawyer.
Just precious.
